Tammy  Gibson, Executive Director of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) presented an overview of why CASA was formed and how it assists children in our community.  “The mission of the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association of Lafourche is to be an independent and objective presence in the courts and to speak for the best interest of abused and neglected children of Lafourche Parish.  We promote and support trained community volunteers to represent our children and help secure for each child a nurturing, safe, and permanent home.”

The idea for CASA was developed by Judge David Suko who, after many years of hearing cases of neglected and abused children, saw the need for getting better information to help him make better decisions.  CASA’s are independent third parties who represent neglected and abused children who have been put into state custody in the courts.  Data indicates that a child with a CASA has a greater chance of getting complete services.  Their chance of reaching permanency also doubles when a CASA volunteer is present.  The reason?  CASA gives the child a place; their voice is heard; they don’t “get lost”.  Children who do “get lost” are more likely to continue the cycle of abuse when they are adults.  And 85% of inmates report that they were abused or neglected as children.

CASA has trained 65 volunteers since its incepting in June 2007.  Lafourche CASA became independent from Terrebonne in October 2009.  Currently 59 children are being served in the parish yet there are 50 others without advocates.  To become a CASA volunteer one must be over the age of 21, submit to a background check, and complete a 5 week training course.

Carla Landry expressed how becoming a CASA volunteer something that has changed her life.  She currently has four CASA children and she knows she has made a difference in their lives.  She said the children become especially attached when they learn that CASA volunteers do this strictly for the love and they are not paid.
